Ecological determinants of variation in phenotypic selection on quantitative immune defence traits

چکیده
Immune defence is an important determinant of organismal fitness. While theoretical models based on tradeoffs in resource allocation predict quantitative immune traits to be subject stabilizing selection due associated energetic costs and self-harm, empirical studies report mainly positive directional selection. This discrepancy may arise from multiple ecological factors that vary nature could influence We examined if activity varies depending challenge/infection risk, between among populations the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis. assessed phenoloxidase-like antibacterial haemolymph while manipulating level challenge imposed by environmental microbes. did this using snails also quantified within-population family-level variation (i.e. evolutionary potential) snails' activity. found strength trait determined function. Thus, infection risk can factor maintaining genetic traits. Additionally, showed low among-population differentiation but high variation. pattern natural are exposed higher temporal than spatial risk.

Phenotypic selection on leaf ecophysiological traits in Helianthus.
Habitats that differ in soil resource availability are expected to differ for selection on resource-related plant traits. Here, we examined spatial and temporal variation in phenotypic selection on leaf ecophysiological traits for 10 Helianthus populations, including two species of hybrid origin, Helianthus anomalus and Helianthus deserticola, and artificial hybrids of their ancestral parents. ...

Optimal immune defence in the light of variation in lifespan.
There is good evidence for costs to both the uses of immune defences and their development and maintenance. The optimal defence will be a balance of these costs with the risk of infection and the virulence of the disease. It is therefore clear that the life-history characteristics of both host and parasite will impact the optimal level of defence, and that this may in part explain the variation...
متن کاملGenetic variation maintained in multilocus models of additive quantitative traits under stabilizing selection.
Stabilizing selection for an intermediate optimum is generally considered to deplete genetic variation in quantitative traits. However, conflicting results from various types of models have been obtained. While classical analyses assuming a large number of independent additive loci with individually small effects indicated that no genetic variation is preserved under stabilizing selection, seve...
